Quite honestly, I think NYLON Magazine is one of the biggest publication eyesores when it comes to layout and design. Yes, I know that’s probably their intent as a ploy to be different then other publications, and at the same time it looks completely unappealing.

I do hold a subscription, but only because it was a gift. I also promptly give said subscriptions away, never bothering to even flip through the mag. It gives me a headache. Note to future gifters: I totally appreciate your generosity and please don’t subscribe me to NYLON.

I received an email today letting subscribers know that our current and future issues will be in digital form, sent via email as attachments, unless we request otherwise. Oh. Hell. No. Somebody overpaid for my subscription and it better come in paper form.

I completely understand wanting to go “green” by reducing paper (and of course the publication wanting to cut costs on printing an actual book). At the same time, magazines are little luxuries that many people like to tote around and read at their leisure. When I read magazines, I like to devour them in one or two sittings, then look at the advertisements. There is no way I would carry around a lap top just to read a magazine and it’s impractical to tote them to the beach or doctor’s office.

I know the digital age has been among us for some time now and the future of the written word is and will continue to rapidly change formats from paper to electronic. I’m aware that someday perhaps all of my favorite publications will only be accessible via Internet and it makes me sad. For now, I expect to be able to tote them around in my handbag and be able to access them without being logged on.

Yes, I do indeed read a lot of articles online. It can be convenient and I totally appreciate it but there’s just something about feeling a glossy page between my fingers and hearing pages flip that makes me happy.

We’re pleased to attach your April issue of NYLON Magazine – in digital format.  Just as DVDs have it all over VHS tapes, we think you will come to agree that our digital edition of NYLON offers a number of advantages over the traditional print edition:

  • No more waiting for your new issues to come in the mail!  We will email each new issue of NYLON to you the day our editors sign off on it!  And yes, the digital edition has all the content of the paper version; plus you can easily click, save, and print out the photos — or share them with friends online.
  • No more lost issues!  Ever had a magazine misplaced by the post office?  Chewed up by the dog?  Borrowed by your BFF?  No problem – each digital edition in your NYLON subscription is always available to you, on our website or your computer!
  • No more paper!  Looking for ways to reduce your carbon footprint?  You have found one – enjoying NYLON Magazine on your screen instead of on paper!  You’ll have less to throw out too.

Again, thank you for subscribing to NYLON.  Wait ‘til you see what we have lined up in months ahead…

Sincerely,

Don Hellinger
President

You’re not the only one who’s pissed:

By the way, Nylon only did this to free (sponsored by Urban Outfitters) subscriptions. The only intelligent thing about Nylon’s experiment was confining it to the group that has the least right to ask for a refund.

  2. I thought it was a paid subscription (it was a “gift” from a friend) but I called and it was the UO free sub. I’m not even going to bother getting the paper issues as NYLON isn’t a fave anyway.

I wonder if your other gift subscriptions were freebies too. Again I’ll direct you to SlickDeals, which has a forum for free magazines:

    Recognize any titles?

By the way, if you never open the magazines you get, why not transfer those subscriptions to a friend who will? Or maybe your local library would appreciate it. Many magazines have websites whose Customer Service section includes the option to change name and address.

  4. The only other magazine I get is National Geographic. My great-uncle has been giving everyone in my family a subscription every year since 1990. We usually donate those to the school down the street.
